Job Description:Overview

Interpreters for National Interpreting Service interpret in a variety of situations. Interpreters must be able to interpret with a high degree of accuracy using the appropriate mode of interpretation for each setting (consecutive or simultaneous). Interpreters must maintain RID Certification. Interpreters must have strong skills in English, ASL, PSE, and signed English and will use the mode of communication most easily understood by the Deaf consumer. Interpreters will work in compliance with all state and Governmental Entities’ policies and procedures and maintain Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) certification. Interpreters will project a positive attitude and will work as a team with colleagues and providers to ensure a positive experience.


Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Interpret with the highest degree of accuracy and completeness
  • Arrive on time to all assignments
  • Dress professionally and appropriately following NIS dress code
  • Possess an awareness of Deaf and Hearing culture
  • Be flexible and able to handle unpredictable situations/schedules/changes
  • Maintain professional boundaries and integrity
  • Have good interpersonal, organizational, and time management skills
  • Complete interpreter encounter forms accurately and honestly
  • Follow all client confidentiality policies and procedures
  • Follow the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct
  • Turn in all related interpreter encounter forms in a timely manner
  • Meet all requirements to continue certification with RID including all continuing education units
  • Maintain membership in good standing with RID
  • Keep all professional liability insurance and credentials up-to-date

  • Criminal Background Checks
  • HIPAA Training
  • Blood-Borne Pathogen Training (for those accepting medical assignments)
  • Immunizations for MMR/Chicken Pox (for those accepting medical assignments)
  • Tuberculosis testing (for those accepting medical assignments)
